Meeting as equals – not because we're identical, but because we are not

Dear friend,

When we meet

I am your equal

Not merely a teacher

Not merely a servant

Able to be both,

willing to shift positions,

while also opening the door to non-hierarchy

A shared exploration of possibilities

Think of me as your peer

Someone who is also on a journey through life

In some areas, you are stronger or wiser

and I learn from you

In others, I am stronger or wiser

and you learn from me

And in others still, we are both learning

Moving together

I am not here to solve your problems for you

but to hold up a mirror for you when you describe them

I am not here to make you better at what you do

but to allow you to stop and just be for a moment

I am not here to fix anything

but to support you when you remember

that there is something in you

that needs no fixing

You might have a bad day

and so might I

You might carry questions without answers

as might I

In fact, I often wonder what I am doing here

And that, I have learned, is part of the journey

I am able to stay with what is uncomfortable

whether it's yours or mine

I am accepting that none of us is perfect

because life isn't about perfection

Standing at the threshold

which is neither this nor that

Seeing the polarities in life

without slipping into polarisation

Not judging doing as better than being

And not judging being as better than doing either

There is no stage

No roles to perform

No positions to hold

Just two people meeting

Sometimes, as you speak,

something becomes clearer

Not because I solve anything

but because something is being seen

Sometimes,

nothing becomes clearer at all

while we stay only to notice

what is already here

What was always here

And sometimes we notice

that something is shifting

I call this Philosophical Companionship
