Linear, Circular & Dynamic Balance
The Way of Phi is based on three fundamental concepts, two of which are the Circular and Linear. In this edition of my newsletter, I dive into how these two, and especially the Linear, has presented itself to me this last week.
The Linear is all about setting goals, going from A to B, doing, and things that can be measured.
The Circular, on the other hand, is about purpose, presence, being and things that cannot be measured.
To the extent that the Circular and the Linear are both activated, Dynamic Balance becomes available. This is the state of flow, which involves the dance between the two, depending on what the situation calls for.
Learning the Linear
As a man, the Linear is naturally closest to my biology. Yet, having been on an inner journey for so long, I’ve spent much of my life immersed in the Circular. While there were moments when I explored the Linear—studying law, learning to stand my ground, working in railways, negotiating salaries—those were exceptions rather than the norm. Often, the Linear felt rigid, even uncomfortable, and I found myself longing to return to the Circular.
But something has shifted. Now, I am embracing the Linear. And I like it!
Over the past week, I’ve noticed my posture improving, my clarity sharpening, and my self-confidence rising. I know what I want, and I am moving toward it. Yet, I remain flexible and fluid, integrating the Linear within the framework of Dynamic Balance.
A Mountain Adventure
A recent hike in Nice illustrated this beautifully. My original plan was to visit Monaco for the day—clearly a Linear decision. However, stepping outside, I caught sight of a mountain to the north and felt an intuitive pull in that direction. Rather than rigidly sticking to my plan, I honored that inspiration and chose nature instead.
Once I set my new course, I moved with purpose—taking a tram to the last stop, then hiking up the hills. Some parts of the trail were challenging, requiring careful navigation (Linear focus without force). As I reached a village, I paused to take in the magnificent views (Circular enjoyment).
Then came a test of adaptability. The roads ahead had no pedestrian paths, and fast-moving cars made walking hazardous. Buses were infrequent, so I chose another path—hitchhiking. A young man in a small truck picked me up, and after a break to enjoy the surroundings, I continued on. Another ride took me much farther than expected, leading to a village I hadn’t planned for—an unexpected Circular twist that made the journey even more rewarding.
Finally, I set my sights on the mountain’s summit. Step by step, I ascended with determination (Linear focus), and after 45 minutes, I reached the top (Linear reward—I made it!). From there, I took in breathtaking views—the Mediterranean stretching to the south, the snow-covered Alps to the north. I stayed for a long while, savoring the moment (Circular presence).
Dynamic Balance & Integration
This journey reinforced a truth I’ve been embodying: the power of Dynamic Balance. The Linear gives direction and drive; the Circular allows for presence and joy. Together, they create a life of purpose and fulfilment.
